more on jokes and online dating

Man, I forgot how hard it is to come up with something to say. I only get inspired to expound on something like every six months.

I'll follow up a little on my post about jokes. I said that jokes are about truth, and I think that's true for the most part. Jokes are also about surprise (I'm stealing this from George Carlin). Surprise is about creativity. Jokes are a mental magic trick, showing people connections between words and ideas that they didn't see before. That's what a pun is, whether it's from Shakespeare or Derrida or Rodney Dangerfield. The best "shock" comedy deals with low-brow subject matter in a high-brow way. Nothing impresses me more than when someone comes up with a new curseword. Like when Borat refers to his ass as his "backpussy." In all the years that I've heard people make insults and cursewords, I'd never heard that!

I also want to say that online dating sucks. I am now a member of 3 social networking websites and 3 more dating sites. I can't get anyone to write to me! I can reach no other conclusion that the internet is secretly changing my head on all my pictures to that of the Kraken, the monster from Clash of the Titans. Could anything else be so terrifying that it could scare the ladies away from writing me? Look how tantalizing my "about me" sections are...honest, slightly cryptic, sensitive...it has to be the Kraken. Or maybe Castle Freak.
