Subject: Let's Get Divorced!

I think people are too harsh about engaging in personal social interaction via email.

I don't know why email has gotten such a bad rap as a vehicle for communicating sensitive things, but I feel like it has been unfairly maligned. Seriously, what's the big deal?

In an email, you can carefully craft exactly what you want to say. Why is that a bad thing? It's hard to think when you're feeling emotional. It's hard to be articulate when your heart's in your throat. Is that supposed to make real-time interactions more authentic? Bologne! Hogwash! Poppycock!

And if you're asking somebody something (to go on a date with you, to be your girlfriend, to marry you, whatever), and they want to say no, then email is much less awkward for BOTH of you. They have time to consider things, and they can say no without feeling quite so much pressure.

Email does have its drawbacks. Things like tone and sarcasm and body language cannot be conveyed easily, which can lead to misunderstanding. And sometimes, the fact that writing an email involves less social pressure means that you say things that you really shouldn't have said. So, I agree, it's not without its flaws. But still...let's lay off poor email, shall we? He/she/it is feeling sad. He/she/it told me so.
