Could this perhaps be the "comfortable narrative" given the difficulties Obama has had with his agenda?
Could be more likely that the US economy and body-politic has simply outgrown the sorts of state control that works in say...Sweden?
I mean when you can spend a trillion dollars (even badly) and the economy barely registers a blip I think it's safe to conclude the levers of fiscal policy may be permanently broken. Perhaps at this stage government might be best served to actually improve the thousands of things it's already promised to do rather than attempting to further massively expand it's charter.
