Let's put my future to a vote
Hello all.
I have been trying to finish up my projects for this semester. Also, I have been thinking a lot about the possibility of dropping out and getting a normal job. I can't really tell if it's just the finals-time stress talking or not.
Here are the two big advantages to being a professor: teaching, which I enjoy, and having summer's off and a long christmas break.
The downsides are very frontloaded: 2 more years of classes, which means assignments and grades and generally lots of ass-kissing. Which means a lot of stress and deadlines and very, very little money. After that, another 2 years consisting of studying for exams, writing a dissertation, and teaching.
So, to summarize the down sides: I'm never really done. I don't have regular hours. So, all my free time is at least a little bit stressful, cause there's never a point where I don't have anything to do. It makes it hard to exercise and read cool novels and stuff.
Also, I have very little money and won't for a long time.
And, finally, I'm living in an area that's nice but where most of there aren't a lot of available women my age, and the ones here are mostly students who will be leaving town when they finish their degree.
With a normal job, i could have a salary, and normal hours, and time to get in shape, and be in a place with a bigger dating pool.
Thoughts? Who thinks I should stay in school? Who thinks I should quit and get a job?
